Live shows are fun if there's a good group acting (while the movie plays), but audience participation viewings are a blast. If you're near any big city there should be a "live" or audience participation viewing somewhere around October. The live show does sound fun, but I've never been. Such a great time, and an amazing subculture when you think that all of this grew in a time without cellphones and internet, people just starting some ridiculous rituals around the showing of this bad movie, and it spreading on its own and turning into a whole performance community. When it was time for me to pull my pants back up I thought, "if not here, where?" and turned around and mooned the crowd. They had me grab my junk while singing the national anthem or something like that. All I can see is spotlight, and I have no idea what's going on, so I just put on my shit-eatingest grin and gave a big thumbs up. I'm wavering up there and this cute cast member in drag starts undoing the fly of my pants. Of course this resulted in my getting dragged up to the front of the theater. I didn't know this was in reference to the show, and I'd just lost my real-life virginity that year, so I was all defiant, "No! No! Not a virgin!" My buddy jumps up and starts pointing at me. Meaning people who had never been to a Rocky Horror Picture Show before. Before the movie, one of the cast asks if there are any virgins in the crowd. We got silly drunk before going in there. A couple of my friends had already been, but I didn't know what it was about. Went to a live show with audience participation when I was 16. Back in the late 70's or early 80's, this was a big thing, because social acceptance wasn't at the point it was today. TL dr: RHPS was all about the scene that developed around the midnight shows - a counterculture where the odd, artsy kids could blend in, and if you were gay or trans, it didn't matter.
